In Atlantic Canada, a number of university centres for entrepreneurship in Atlantic Canada pooled together some of their programming (e.g. 6 universities got together to provide a workshop series). QUESTION: What combinations of program structure and use of platform has worked well (and not well) as you (we all) have experimented with shifting our content online?FOLLOE-UP QUESTION: What different kinds of programs have translated well directly from in-person to virtual, and what has had to be more thoroughly reimagined for a remote setting (to best take advantage of a digital platform)?

@luis we had big budget cuts and one way we are working with it is to turn some efforts to launching a new course similar to Stanford's Thought leader series. We are calling it Impactful Innovators. By making this a course, all AV and recording efforts will be covered by the Institution as opposed to us hiring an outside vendor to capture the talks. Big savings.
Luis Martinez

at case western reserve we have been looking at how to engage alumni outside of our region that guest lecture or teach at other institutions to put together an alumni-led entrepreneurship seminar series. not credit bearing and experimenting with badging and assignments/readings. open to students, alums, community. streaming on LinkedIn live which i would also recommend folks look into using. still in beta.
reardk@rpi.edu
50:56
@catherine back in April when we were rushing to switch our final business plan competition to go virtual, we chose to eliminate the live interaction between judges and participants for simplicity purposes. Our students didn't like that. They wanted to be able to answer judges questions live.

51:13
It brings more value to students to be able to network with entrepreneurial students from other universities. It’s great for creating remote startups as well.
Emily Bear (Purdue)
51:43
@catharine - at Purdue, we're doing callouts and workshops for our competition via Zoom, using a Brightspace course page essentially to hold content and stay engaged in between workshops, and then a service called Pralent to register students and handle submissions/virtual judging. Last spring, we held our entire business model competition and judge feedback sessions via Zoom. It went well!
Florian Villaumé
52:06
That would be great!
Catharine Ingram

@Catharine Our Center at the University of Mississippi is hosting an annual speaker event virtually this fall. Free from arranging venue, food and other logistics. In the past, we usually have 1 keynote and 1 panel on one day, but through Zoom, we are hosting 2 panels this time — engaging more people and broadening our reach. It costs nothing and we can use the content for teaching and our future podcast.

We are hosting our first virtual hackathon in September. Has anyone else had experience in doing this successfully?
Kelly Reardon (RPI)
54:26
@debra Our Institution has eliminated all travel, so it is a no-go for us.
Debra Jonasson-Young
54:28
Are you still planning on moving forward with these events - virtually - any planning to continue live events if later in the spring season?
Catharine Ingram
55:06
Thank you all for your responses to my questions!!
Alyssa Martina
55:25
When you do virtual mentoring, do you reach out to other faculty members with specific subject matter expertise to help with pro formas or marketing plans? Or do you and your students help with this work?
Brian Breslin
56:39
Has anyone figured out how to replicate the white board experience on zoom meetings? Lots of our mentoring would benefit from the ability for people to doodle/draw
Kelly Reardon (RPI)
56:44
@florian Discord seems to be the new Slack for students. We are raising awareness there.
Lauren Dunning
56:58
We use MURAL a lot as an additional resource for virtual brainstorming etc
Florian Villaumé
57:14
Did you identify new issues for students that emerged because of Covid-19? For example, we started offering virtual childcare during workshops because student-parents (mostly women) couldn’t attend our virtual workshop.
Greg Wymer - MIT Trust Center
57:25
Are other schools hearing from their students about overload of all these physical events becoming virtual and a sense that they’re being slammed with too much virtual content to start the semester?
Blake Sims St. Louis, Innovate@BU, she/her
57:43
BU has been using Remo for our networking events. The students really like to freedom to move themselves and connect with others
John Stavig
57:45
At Minnesota, we have over 200 judges in our MN Cup competition. They've loved the online live judging - more time efficient, greater participation, more structured discussion and voting. They don't want to go back to in-person (before a final event hopefully next year).
Emily Bear (Purdue)
57:47
@Brian there is a whiteboard feature on Zoom where participants can annotate - works great in small meetings or in breakout rooms
Russ Tanner
58:00
II, the legend :)
Paul Reeder
58:09
We also used voice thread to allow students to record their pitches and post. https://voicethread.com/
Florian Villaumé
58:10
@kelly Interesting. Do you use Discord for your centre or for events?
Lauren Dunning
58:23
@ Greg-- we've been trying to think through downloadable resources in addition to live events. Students need support outside of just real-time synced events
Blake Sims St. Louis, Innovate@BU, she/her
58:26
BU also had students run a virtual hackathon where teams used Miro to collaborate creatively
Brian Breslin
58:33
@Emily bear, but only 1 person can annotate I believe
Linnell Bickford
58:45
For our hackathon we are going to try using slack channels for the students to communicate and build ideas and teams. We will use Zoom for our main events and the teams can create their own zoom rooms. We took this format from MIT's virtual hackathon.
Jolene Cardassi
58:57

You can also link your iPad running whiteboard/notes to your computer and then share the screen - so you can draw as you talk and they see it.
Lisa Lavina
59:18
We use the Remo platform for networking and other ‘events’ that would have been styled like a showcase. It allows attendees to choose what table/people they want to visit, but host can also call attendees into a general session, too.
Emily Bear (Purdue)
59:32
@Brian - there is a way to turn on the ability for all participants. We've also used the process Yvonne mentioned.
Sumiko Hong
59:40
Brian Breslin, have you tried google jam boards? They’re a lot like an online white board.
Jon Down
59:43
Can you put a poll up for up for platform preference - Zoom, Teams, Other? Be interesting to see what people are using.
Catharine Ingram
01:00:22
@Jon We use Teams internally, and Zoom externally. We use both - it just depends
Michael Goldberg
01:00:36
anyone using either facebook live or LinkedIn live to stream events? we have used both and are finding a little better engagement on LinkedIn live.
Catharine Ingram
01:00:46
@Michael - yes - both

01:01:03
Flipgrid is a ridiculously simple video sharing tool for the students to create/share/discuss short clips. Now free after being acquired by MSN.
Emily Bear (Purdue)
01:01:08
@Michael we've used FB live and didn't have a lot of engagement
Mukund
01:01:15
At Stevens, we use SecureMeeting for all our entrepreneurial teams. (www.securemeeting.org)
Charles Matthews, PhD
01:01:25
Zoom is great and will continue to use it, but also have recently explored the robust features of Echo360 to Livestream my hybrid class. I can link it to Zoom to add videos and more. It is integrated in my Canvas LMS. I will be using it for my asynchronous all online class in the second half. If you have Echo360 with your LMS, worth a look at using it for more than just classroom capture. https://echo360.com/blog/

01:02:21
Has anyone done a virtual team forming event for competitions? we usually do this in person and are struggling to find a way to do it virtually that works as well.
Stephen Daze
01:02:50
Zoom is great to randomize groups when you want students to meet new people in group work. I then switch to Teams when I want to lock the teams down. Teams gives them a space they can go back to any time.
Sumiko Hong
01:03:02
Great question, Emily, I’m interested in hearing how others are solving this too.
Kelly Reardon (RPI)
01:03:31
@emily I saw a cool one while watching a webinar conference thingy this summer. I'll look it up.
Jon Down
01:03:32
Yeah, I like Teams but many faculty on our campus are moving to Zoom from Teams.
Jan Finlayson
01:03:46
In a typical year we host Mandela Washington Fellows from Africa. That program was cancelled, so we recruited past MWF alumni and paired them our students that had cancelled internships. We had funding and were able to pay those students. We are continuing a similar program this fall.
Vickie Gibbs (she/ her/ hers)
01:04:31
At UNC’s Eship Center we worked with an outside organization called District C (https://www.districtc.co/) for a summer internship program where they did virtual team building … their model was really immersive and worked really well … they have university partners so check them out and let me know if anyone wants an intro
Linnell Bickford
01:05:33
There is an app that can mix teams for you. It's a little pricey but I experienced it at a conference and was impressed. mixtroz.com

01:06:21
Is anyone using startupspace.us or similar community apps to link entrepreneurs, mentors, investors? What's your experience been?
iheanyi
01:06:58

Luis Martinez
01:10:00
I agree. This COVID situation has allowed us to bring the kinds of work we do really move the University forward in different ways
Yvonne Cariveau
01:10:01
Philip - great question - we’ve had some questions come up about the recordings and screenshots from events being reposted, etc.
Bob Pinckney
01:10:04
At UGA we run a student-run venture fund that can make grants of $1,000 - $5,000 for student businesses. Goal is to fund 30 companies per year. Students are pitching virtually this semester to the student panel for awards. Works well.
